I’m 53 and still in the thick of perimenopause, wishing I’d just hit menopause already. The constant periods and feeling rubbish are exhausting. My symptoms started at 47 skin issues, rashes, acute urticaria, then food allergies, sleep issues, achy joints, exhaustion, weight gain, loss of strength and things only got worse. About 18 months ago, I hit rock bottom. It felt like being slammed by a sledgehammer.
I was overwhelmed, tearful, anxious, and had zero confidence. I couldn’t manage the simplest tasks and felt completely lost. I honestly thought I’d have to quit my new job because I could barely string a sentence together, let alone manage projects.
In desperation, I went back to my GP after being dismissed so many times with “you’re too young for perimenopause” and just broke down in tears. That finally led to a referral to a local menopause specialist, who was an absolute godsend. She listened, understood, and prescribed HRT that very day. I started it immediately, and from that moment, things began to shift. I’m not 100% yet, but I’m definitely on the way back.
Inspired by Mary, I started weight training six months ago. I now train three times a week as a powerlifter and have my sights set on qualifying for competitions in January 2026. It’s still tough I’m often tired and have to push myself to get to the gym but I always feel better afterwards. It lifts my energy and my spirits.

I’m slowly discovering a new version of myself stronger, more confident, and more at peace with aging. If I make it to competitions next year, I’ll be absolutely absolutely ecstatic as it’ll be my first-ever sporty achievement.
